چکیده

Abstract We describe a new transit-detection algorithm designed to detect single-transit events in discontinuous Perkins INfrared Exosatellite Survey (PINES) observations of L and T dwarfs. use this search for transits 131 PINES light curves identify two transit candidates: 2MASS J18212815+1414010 (2MASS J1821+1414) J08350622+1953050 J0835+1953). disfavor J1821+1414 as genuine candidate due the known variability properties source. cannot rule out planetary nature J0835+1953's event perform follow-up an attempt recover second transit. A repeat has yet be observed, but these suggest that target is unlikely cause Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulation curve estimate planet radius ranging from 4.2 ? 1.6 + 3.5 R ? ${5.8}_{-2.1}^{+4.8}{R}_{\oplus 5.8 2.1 4.8 , depending on host’s age. Finally, we injection recovery our light-curve sample. inject planets into data using measured M-dwarf occurrence rates them transit-search algorithm. Our detection that, assuming rates, should have roughly 1% chance detecting could depth observe J0835+1953. If J0835+1953 b confirmed, it would enhancement short-period around dwarfs comparison M dwarfs, which challenge predictions formation models.

The Distribution of Transit Durations for Kepler Planet Candidates and Implications for their Orbital Eccentricities

Doppler planet searches have discovered that giant planets follow orbits with a wide range of orbital eccentricities, revolutionizing theories of planet formation. The discovery of hundreds of exoplanet candidates by NASA’s Kepler mission enables astronomers to characterize the eccentricity distribution of small exoplanets. Measuring the eccentricity of individual planets is only practical in f...

The potential for Earth-mass planet formation around brown dwarfs

Recent observations point to the presence of structured dust grains in the discs surrounding young brown dwarfs, thus implying that the first stages of planet formation take place also in the sub-stellar regime. Here, we investigate the potential for planet formation around brown dwarfs and very low mass stars according to the sequential core accretion model of planet formation. We find that, f...

Constraints on Planet Occurrence Around Nearby Mid-to-Late M Dwarfs From the Mearth Project

The MEarth Project is a ground-based photometric survey intended to find planets transiting the closest and smallest main-sequence stars. In its first four years, MEarth discovered one transiting exoplanet, the 2.7R⊕ planet GJ1214b. Here, we answer an outstanding question: in light of the bounty of small planets transiting small stars uncovered by the Kepler mission, should MEarth have found mo...

Proper motions of field L and T dwarfs - II

By using images taken with WFCAM on UKIRT and SofI on the NTT and combining them with 2MASS we have measured proper motions for 126 L and T dwarfs in the dwarf archive. Two of these L dwarfs appear to have M dwarf common proper motion companions, and 2 also appear to be high velocity dwarfs, indicating possible membership of the thick disc. We have also compared the motion of these 126 objects ...
